Despite New Mexico's significant budget surplus of $3.48 billion for 2024, there are proposals to increase fees for state parks. The recommendations being considered include eliminating most day-use fees for residents, implementing a non-resident day-use fee, and eliminating annual passes. Additionally, there are proposed adjustments that would increase camping and utility fees, boat registration and launching fees, as well as entrance fees at the Living Desert Zoo, Gardens State Park, and Smokey Bear Historical Park.

These potential changes have prompted discussions regarding the state's priorities and whether these actions serve the best interests of its citizens. Members of the public are encouraged to leave comments to express their opinions on these proposals.

The organization Better Together New Mexico is actively speaking out against what they view as government overreach in this matter. They urge residents to take action by voicing their concerns.

Better Together New Mexico can be reached at PO BOX 95735, Albuquerque, NM 87199.
