The Las Cruces City Council is set to vote on a Pro-Palestinian Ceasefire Resolution on Monday, May 6. This issue has generated significant debate within the community.
Protesters have urged the City Council to endorse a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Three councilors—Bencomo, Corran, and Graham—have expressed support for the resolution, which will be discussed at the upcoming meeting.
Residents who wish to voice their opinions are encouraged to email or call council members or attend the meeting to make public comments. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at City Hall, located at 700 N Main St, Las Cruces.
A range of viewpoints has emerged from the community regarding this resolution. One resident expressed strong opposition: "Why in earth would they support a terrorist organization controlled by Iran hamass has committed genocide themselves." Another criticized the City Council's involvement in international issues: "City Councils have the responsibility and obligation to work on focusing hard and fast to bring solutions to the issues rapidly decaying our beloved City and its community."
Others voiced concerns about local governance priorities: "It is not City Council’s concern to get involved with international issues. It is your responsibility to be concerned about local issues such as homelessness, addiction, mental health, crime, and other topics that reflect our community."
Supporters of Israel also made their voices heard: "Please do not support anything that is against Israel," one comment read.
Attendees are advised that Mayor Ken Miyagishima may require them to wait until this agenda item is reached before speaking on it.
