A newly revised version of the Las Cruces development code has been released, featuring several improvements. However, concerns remain regarding the proposed changes to the parking code. Critics argue that the new regulations will severely limit the amount of parking businesses are allowed to have.

One significant issue highlighted is that under the current draft, businesses may not be able to provide sufficient parking for their customers. This is expected to be particularly problematic for restaurants and bars. For example, a mid-sized 3,000 square foot restaurant could accommodate 100-120 customers with approximately 20 staff members but would only be permitted 15 parking spaces. This allocation would not even suffice for employee parking.

City Council is scheduled to hold a work session on this proposed zoning code on Monday, June 24 at 1 p.m. Residents are encouraged to submit written comments about the new code through an online platform provided by the city.

For those interested in providing feedback, it is recommended to click on the box labeled “3 Zoning Regulations” on the comment form page and submit their thoughts. The form allows only short comments; however, multiple submissions are welcome to ensure voices are heard.

Potential talking points about the updated proposed zoning code have been suggested but should not be copied verbatim. Personalizing comments will likely yield more effective communication. Respectful discourse is encouraged for maximum positive impact.
