Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed support after the House Judiciary Committee unanimously passed House Bill 103, which aims to enhance penalties for battery on peace officers.

The bill classifies aggravated battery on a police officer as a second-degree felony under certain conditions: if it inflicts great bodily harm, involves the use of a deadly weapon, or is committed in a manner likely to cause significant injury or death.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every single day to keep New Mexicans safe. They deserve to know that we have their backs and won’t tolerate behavior that puts them at risk,” stated Gov. Lujan Grisham.

House Bill 103 will now proceed to the House floor for further consideration.
