New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has expressed her condolences following the death of former President Jimmy Carter. In a statement, she highlighted his contributions as both a leader and humanitarian.

"Manny and I were saddened to learn of the passing of President Jimmy Carter on Sunday, and today we mourn the loss of this great American leader and humanitarian who dedicated his life to helping others," said Gov. Lujan Grisham.

The governor praised Carter's efforts during his presidency, noting his work on environmental protections, civil rights, and international diplomacy. "President Carter served nobly in the White House and fought valiantly for environmental protections, civil rights, stronger U.S. alliances in Europe and much more," she stated. She also acknowledged his role in brokering peace between Egypt and Israel.

After leaving office, Carter continued to impact global issues through initiatives with the Carter Center. "Upon his return to civilian life, President Carter continued to make the world a better place through his work with the Carter Center," said Gov. Lujan Grisham.

His involvement with Habitat for Humanity was also noted by the governor: "His tireless work on behalf of Habitat for Humanity—including volunteering his own manual labor—shined a global spotlight on the need for livable, affordable housing."

Gov. Lujan Grisham emphasized that President Carter's legacy will inspire future public servants: "President Carter possessed deep convictions, visionary ideas and a tireless work ethic, and our country is a much better place because of his service."

In tribute to President Carter's memory, flags at all state government buildings in New Mexico will be flown at half-staff until January 28th next year.
