Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed former state Senator Greg Nibert to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) for a six-year term starting January 1, 2025. Nibert takes over from Commissioner James Ellison, whose term ended on December 31, 2024.
Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Nibert stated, "I am honored to be nominated to the Public Regulation Commission." He emphasized his commitment to regulating utilities according to existing laws, particularly highlighting the Energy Transition Act. "The PRC plays a crucial role in ensuring we meet the renewable energy targets set forth in statute for the betterment of our state. I look forward to securing New Mexico’s energy future for generations to come."
Nibert's appointment follows his recent departure from the state Senate on December 31. He was selected from more than 30 candidates by the Public Regulation Commission Nominating Committee. This committee was created under legislation signed by Gov. Lujan Grisham in 2020 and is responsible for evaluating and recommending qualified candidates for PRC positions.
As a commissioner, Nibert will earn an annual salary of $190,000. His professional background includes serving as a partner at Hinkle Shanor LLP since 1987, with expertise in real property, energy, and administrative law. Throughout his career as a legislator and community leader, he has been involved in significant energy and natural resource projects across New Mexico.
