Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has presented her executive budget recommendation for fiscal year 2026, focusing on enhancing investments in healthcare, child welfare, and infrastructure throughout New Mexico. The proposed budget outlines $10.9 billion in recurring spending, marking a 5.3% increase compared to the current year's expenditure.
A significant portion of the budget includes an additional $172 million allocated for state employee pay raises, which encompasses increased compensation for educators in New Mexico. Reserves are maintained at 30.4%.
"This fiscally sound budget proposal prioritizes early childhood education, clean energy, infrastructure, affordable housing, and expanded healthcare access to build a stronger foundation for New Mexicans," stated Governor Lujan Grisham. She emphasized the importance of collaboration with state lawmakers to reach consensus on key priorities.
The budget was released more than a month before the New Mexico Legislature convenes on January 21, allowing ample time for review and input from both lawmakers and the public. "Transparency drives trust," said Lujan Grisham regarding the early release of the budget.
