The city of Las Cruces is considering changes to its zoning code, sparking concern among residents. A revised proposal suggests allowing apartment complexes of any size in all neighborhoods, a shift from the current focus on single-family residential areas.

Sarah Smith, CCIA 1st Vice Chair, has encouraged community members to express their views. "If this is important to you, please email, call, and/or attend the Monday 12/9 City Council work session," she stated.

Smith acknowledged improvements in the new draft compared to earlier versions but noted ongoing issues with single-family residential zones. "The proposed zoning code is still much better than the original draft from many months ago," she said. However, concerns remain about the impact on traditional neighborhood structures.

Residents are urged to participate in a City Council work session scheduled for December 9 at 1 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting provides an opportunity for public comment, though no voting will occur during this session.

To facilitate community involvement, Smith provided contact information for City Council members and emphasized respectful communication. She also advised against sending group emails for those seeking responses.

Smith offered potential talking points for residents preparing statements but recommended personalizing messages for effectiveness: "Your communications will be most effective if you add in your own words as well."

The redline version of the newest proposed code and a draft zoning map are available for public review. Residents interested in voicing their opinions can refer to these documents as they prepare their comments.

For further engagement, residents can reach out via email or attend the upcoming work session where public input will be heard by City Council members.
