Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency for Chaves County following severe flooding in the Roswell area. This decision unlocks $1 million in state funds to support relief efforts. Since the flooding began on October 19, first responders have rescued over 300 individuals.
On Monday, the governor visited Roswell and is receiving updates from officials regarding the situation. She stated, "My declaration of a state of emergency for Chaves County will help support local recovery efforts in the aftermath of historic and severe flooding in and around Roswell." Gov. Lujan Grisham expressed gratitude for the quick response by local authorities and state departments.
Two executive orders have been issued as part of this response. Executive Order 155 directs $750,000 to be allocated by the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for emergency operations. Additionally, Executive Order 156 releases $250,000 to assist the New Mexico National Guard with disaster relief efforts.
