Alma d’Arte High School, a charter school in Las Cruces, is currently experiencing significant challenges. Unlike other schools in the area, Alma d’Arte operates under its own school board and does not fall under the jurisdiction of Las Cruces Public Schools.
The school's administration has been implementing substantial changes with the goal of improving the institution. However, these efforts have met with resistance from both students and parents. The school faces the risk of losing state grants and potential closure.
A community advocacy organization is calling on CCIA members to attend a school board meeting scheduled for April 15. The purpose of this attendance is to show community support for the school and to evaluate whether CCIA should get involved in addressing these issues.
There may be media coverage at the meeting due to heightened public interest. Juan and Joan are among those planning to attend. The agenda for the meeting can be accessed at: https://www.almadarte.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/April-Agenda-2024-Final.pdf
One commenter expressed strong opinions regarding the situation, stating, "Amador and Romero are the reason parents and students are protesting the actions of administration! It’s not to get the school shut down it’s to get current administration out of their positions." They further alleged that "students have been bullied" and that "former teachers have been removed because they refuse to be a part of Amador’s terror." Concerns were also raised about how an LGBTQ+ friendly school could be administered by someone perceived as unsupportive towards students and parents.
