City of Albuquerque recently issued the following announcement.
Resurfaced tennis courts and new benches highlight improvements
The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department today celebrated the grand reopening of the tennis courts at Columbus Park with neighbors after a $157,000 upgrade. The four courts located at the northwest Albuquerque park were recently resurfaced along with several other improvements requested by park users.
“Outdoor recreation at our City parks is more important than ever and as a relatively COVID-safe sport, tennis has been quite popular,” stated Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Columbus Park was the top neighborhood tennis court resurfacing project in the City. We are delighted to get this project completed and invite the public back onto these revitalized tennis courts.”
“Tennis and pickleball are great sports for all ages,” stated City Councilor Isaac Benton. “The North Valley will be well-served by this public amenity for years to come.”
In addition to top-notch tennis complexes at the Jerry Cline Tennis and Recreation Center, Sierra Vista Tennis Complex, and Ventana Ranch Park, neighborhood tennis courts are heavily used across the city. At Columbus Park, extensive deterioration from use and exposure to the elements required a complete renovation of the concrete court foundation and the court surfaces. The new courts have been done in attractive U.S. Open colors (blue courts with green borders). The project also included relocating the tennis backboard to address a park safety issue, repainting the tennis net posts and light poles, replacing the light heads with LED heads, and replacing four court benches. In addition, all four courts will be striped for pickleball, creating eight new pickle ball courts for public use.
Following the court dedication, Parks & Recreation staff conducted a free tennis skills clinic for kids and adults.
In total, the Department invested $157,976.31 on the project, which was funded from 2019 General Obligation Bond proceeds allocated to the Parks and Recreation Department.
