Conservative group to make ethics complaint against mayor for website bond push

Ethics

The Rio Grande Foundation announced it would file an ethics complaint against the city of Albuquerque after Mayor Tim Keller made a pro-bond push on the city's website urging residents to vote "yes" on a proposed bond.

The group's president, Paul Gessing, said the group would file the ethics complaint due to the push on the website, which is a city taxpayer-funded website.

Keller said in his message that the bond would provide funds for police vehicles and equipment as well as fund a new library for the city, according to KUNM. After Gessing's complaint was announced, Jessie Damazyn, a spokesperson for the mayor's office, told KUNM that Keller ensured the communication on the website followed the city's ethics ordinance.

Gessing told The Associated Press that he believes election laws bar the city, as well as counties and school districts, from using its website to urge taxpayers to vote "yes" on bonds or levies.
