Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has expressed deep sorrow and concern following a mass shooting in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The incident occurred on Friday night at Young Park, resulting in three fatalities and injuring at least 15 others.
"I am heartbroken and horrified by the mass shooting Friday night at Young Park in Las Cruces," stated Gov. Lujan Grisham. She extended her condolences to the victims, their families, and the community of Las Cruces during this challenging period.
The governor described the event as "shocking and unacceptable," emphasizing that such violence severely impacts communities. In response, she is deploying state resources to assist local law enforcement with their investigation into the attack.
Gov. Lujan Grisham highlighted a concerning increase in violent crime within Las Cruces, noting a 46 percent rise compared to the previous year. She stressed that these statistics represent real people affected by crime.
The governor also referenced past tragedies, including the death of Officer Jonah Hernandez last year, to underscore what she perceives as legislative shortcomings in addressing crime effectively. "New Mexicans are heartbroken," she remarked, criticizing the legislature for failing to pass laws related to juvenile crime or assault weapon bans.
Gov. Lujan Grisham urged public officials to recognize New Mexico's ongoing crime issues and called for immediate action to protect communities. She hinted at convening a special legislative session focused on public safety.
She reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating across government levels and with community partners to find comprehensive solutions targeting gun violence's root causes while equipping law enforcement adequately.
