Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has announced the appointment of two new judges to New Mexico's judicial system. Matthew Chavez will serve as a judge in the Second Judicial District Court, replacing the retired Honorable Stan Whitaker. Brenna Clani-Washinawatok will take over as a judge in the Eleventh Judicial District Court, succeeding the retired Honorable Daylene Marsh.
Chavez is currently Chief Legal Counsel at the New Mexico Department of Public Safety under Secretary Jason Bowie. His previous experience includes working as a public defender in Albuquerque's Second Judicial District Office. He is an alumnus of the University of New Mexico School of Law and joined the bar in 2012.
Clani-Washinawatok has been a Child Support Hearing Officer and has provided legal counsel for over ten years to the New Mexico Health Care Authority’s Child Support Services Division. She also graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law and was admitted to practice law in 2005.
Chavez will begin his new role on March 15, while Clani-Washinawatok will start on March 1.
