A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Sierra County NM Clerk & Election Division on February 5, 2025. The request was made by Enchantment State News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request sought information about all candidates running in the upcoming election under the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act, 14-2-1 NMSA 1978 et seq. Specifically, Enchantment State News asked for details such as the candidates' first, middle and last names, the office they are running for, jurisdiction of the office, party affiliation of the candidate and their contact information including address, phone number and email address.
As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we at Enchantment State News believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
