Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has addressed the recent resignations of the Western New Mexico University (WNMU) Board of Regents. In her statement, she announced the acceptance of these resignations and emphasized her intent to appoint new leaders committed to public trust.

The governor expressed gratitude towards members of the New Mexico Legislature for voicing concerns about a significant issue involving the board. The board's decision to approve a $1.9 million severance package for Dr. Shepard was highlighted as particularly troubling given that it far exceeds the median income for a family in New Mexico.

Gov. Lujan Grisham stated, "My office is already reviewing candidates to replace the former WNMU board and usher in a new era of accountability at the university." She underscored that all public universities must maintain fiscal responsibility.

She also refuted claims by the board regarding their operational independence from both her office and the Department of Higher Education, labeling it as part of a larger accountability problem. While acknowledging challenges in attracting talent, she stressed balancing this with taxpayer obligations.

The governor welcomed an investigation by the Attorney General into these contracts and indicated plans to work with lawmakers on reforming severance package structures at public institutions.

Gov. Lujan Grisham concluded with a focus on responsible management of resources and student success, noting that new regents will be appointed promptly, filling vacancies without needing immediate confirmation by the Senate.
