Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has directed that all flags in New Mexico be flown at half-staff to honor the late former state senator John Arthur Smith. This tribute will commence at sunrise on October 18 and continue until sundown on October 21.
Smith, who passed away on October 7, served New Mexico for over three decades. He represented District 35—which encompasses Dona Ana, Hidalgo, Luna, and Sierra Counties—from 1989 until his retirement in 2020. As the long-standing chairman of the New Mexico Senate Finance Committee, he was respected by colleagues from both sides of the political spectrum. His tenure was marked by prudent fiscal policy guidance aimed at benefiting New Mexicans.
In addition to his fiscal contributions, Smith was a strong advocate for investments in healthcare and education, particularly in Deming, his hometown. He played a significant role in improving hospitals and schools and was instrumental in establishing the Early Childhood Education and Care Department trust fund. This initiative laid the groundwork for universal high-quality childcare in New Mexico and highlighted his leadership in early childhood education reform.
“Senator John Arthur Smith’s dedication to our state, his financial expertise, and his commitment to improving the lives of New Mexicans will leave a lasting legacy,” stated Gov. Lujan Grisham. “It is fitting to honor his life of public service through this period of mourning.”
