Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has released a statement regarding the passing of former New Mexico Representative Dona Irwin. Irwin, who served District 32 and Deming for 18 years, is remembered for her commitment to the community.
In her statement, Gov. Lujan Grisham expressed admiration for Irwin's dedication to various causes in New Mexico. "I had the privilege of working alongside Dona Irwin for many years, and I will always remember her as a stalwart advocate for New Mexico’s children, families, and rural communities," she said.
Irwin was noted for her work in connecting agricultural heritage with educational opportunities through programs like the Cooperative Extension Service. The governor highlighted this aspect of her contributions: "Dona understood the vital connection between agriculture, our land-grant university families, and programs like 4-H that support the next generation."
Her efforts extended beyond agriculture. Long before these issues gained national attention, she worked on initiatives related to healthy meals and community gardens in senior centers across rural areas of New Mexico. Gov. Lujan Grisham acknowledged this by stating that Irwin's "visionary leadership improved the lives of so many in our state."
Reflecting on Irwin's character, Gov. Lujan Grisham remarked on her integrity: "Above all, when Dona gave you her word, she kept it." She offered condolences to Irwin's family: "My deepest condolences go to her children, Craig and Janet, her grandchildren, and her entire family."
Dona Irwin represented Deming and House District 32 from 1999 until 2017.
