Amazon received $5 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from New Mexico communities for one project.

Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found New Mexico provided the 34th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.

New Mexico is ranked behind Minnesota (1 projects/$6 million) and ahead of Arizona (2 projects/$5 million), Nevada (5 projects/$3 million), and Rhode Island (1 projects/$3 million).

The $5 million to Amazon was provided by the Bernalillo government through various subsidies.

New Mexico caps subsidies at $110 million per year but there is a significiant loophole found through the state's film tax credit. The credit costs New Mexico over $100 million each year. Film companies with a 10-year lease on a production facility within the state are exempt from the subsidy limit.

Transparency of provided subsidies in New Mexico is poor, due to difficulties search for data and often finding it in various reports instead of one centralized location.

As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
