City of Las Cruces issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.
Police are warning residents of impersonators portraying themselves as Census takers who may be trying to obtain personal or financial information.
Two incidents were reported last week to Las Cruces police. Neither of the residents fell victim to the impersonator or any potential scam.
A Census taker will carry a badge that identifies them as a worker for the United States Census Bureau. Census takers are tasked with asking questions pertaining to names, ethnicity, and dates of birth of all individuals living within the home along with homeownership or rental situation.
Census takers will not ask for any banking or financial information.
Residents who wish to verify a Census taker can call the Census Field Service Office at 1-301-763-4748. Census takers will be in the field through Oct. 31. The 2020 Census can also be completed online by visiting www.census.gov.
Anyone who suspects a fraudulent Census taker, or any suspicious activity, can call police at (575) 526-0795 or 911 if it is an emergency.
