The New Mexico House GOP website reported that Rep. Tim Lewis (R-Rio Rancho) is stepping down rather than seeking reelection.
Lewis has been in the state Legislature for nearly 10 years and chose to take his name off the ballot as he stated he wants more time with his wife and four children.
Lewis has been integral in a number of committees during his time serving as state representative, including the Labor and Veterans Affairs Committee, the Energy Committee, the Business and Industry Committee and the Tax and Revenue Committee.
“The decision to withdraw now has not been an easy one for me,” Lewis told New Mexico GOP. “My family is the primary reason, but I also recognized early on that the office is best served by those who do not make a career out of politics. As a high school social studies teacher, I have tried to model what good public service looks like.”
Lewis teaches at Albuquerque Public Schools and chose to not receive his salary from the school while on legislative sessions.
