Accusations of using her office to purchase jewelry from a nonessential business has Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham facing a wave of criticism.
The governor’s office claims the transaction took place remotely and didn’t violate her public health order but Republicans are terming her actions hypocritical, the U.S. News reported.
The purchase took place in April as the governor called an employee as the business, Lilly Barrack and bought jewelry over the phone. That employee went to the stored, placed it outside where someone, who has not been identified, picked it up for the governor.
Curbside delivery was not allowed at the time and the store was closed to other customers. The governor’s office said the purchase was made by the governor with her own personal funds as a private citizen, the U.S. News reported.
“This was really disgraceful, especially since so many people have been hurting for so long,” Steve Pearce, chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, told the U.S. News.
