In the hopes of increasing transparency in spending, the New Mexico Senate recently passed SB 27.
According to NM Senate Republicans’ Twitter account, the bill was passed by the senate 27-2 after the Senate Public Affairs and Finance passed it unanimously.
This bill will require that the Governor’s Contingency Fund spending is made public, which it currently is not. The fund consists of $70,000.
Senator Sander Rue (R-Albuquerque Westside) introduced the bill and among the requirements are that the governor would have to report monthly to the legislature what money is being spent on, the Governor’s Contingency Fund will be audited on a yearly basis and the fund will not be able to be used to supplement the governor’s salary.
While the bill does not seek to direct the governor how the money should be spent, it will make her decisions transparent, which Rue believes would greatly benefit the people of the state.
