City of Gallup NM issued the following announcement May 4.
The State of NM is establishing two water points to ensure the Navajo Nation has access to water while supporting the city of Gallup closures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the area. A request to extend the Gallup closure was granted by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Sunday. The extension will expire on Thursday, May 7, at noon.
The two water points will be located at the Gallup Port of Entry and the Red Rock State Park. There will be a large tanker with an additional 1,200 gallons at each location. A separate tanker with non-potable water will be set up at the Red Rock State Park for livestock. The New Mexico National Guard will provide supervision at both locations.
The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will send bottled water to these locations. McKinley County includes a corner of the main part of the Navajo Nation, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. Gallup is a regional shopping destination, including for many reservation residents. The roadblocks are in place to restrict the influx of people coming into the city to shop.
