A Newcomb man has been sentenced to over three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a knife assault that left another man seriously injured. Josiah Bodie, 23, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, received a 37-month sentence for attacking a man outside Basha’s grocery store in Shiprock, New Mexico, on November 12, 2024.
Court documents indicate that Bodie and the victim argued before the incident. Surveillance footage captured Bodie approaching the victim with a knife as the latter tried to leave. Witnesses said Bodie threw the victim against a wall and stabbed him several times. The victim required hospitalization for multiple days due to serious injuries sustained during the attack; Bodie was also treated for injuries from the altercation.
Bodie pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Following his prison term, he will be placed under supervised release for three years. There is no parole in the federal system.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office announced the sentencing. The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with help from both the Navajo Nation Police Department and Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Caitlin L. Dillon prosecuted.
