Las Cruces Public Schools announced on May 21 that three of its educators have received top honors from the National Education Association Southwest Region and NEA-New Mexico for their service to students and schools across New Mexico.

The awards highlight the contributions of Josephine Lopez, Anita Martos, and Gail Wheeler, who were recognized for their dedication, leadership, and support within the school community. These recognitions reflect the district’s commitment to excellence in education and its efforts to foster an inclusive environment.

Josephine Lopez, office manager at Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy (MVLA), was named Education Support Professional of the Year by both the NEA Southwest Region and NEA-New Mexico Recognitions Committee. She will be honored during a statewide banquet in October. Irma Valdespino, President of the Las Cruces chapter of the Classified School Employees Council (CSEC-LC), said: “It has been my privilege to see Josie grow into a strong and confident advocate – not only for secretaries, but for all classified staff. Her dedication to supporting her colleagues, along with her integrity and leadership, makes her an outstanding candidate for this award.”

Anita Martos, Principal at MVLA, was selected as Administrator of the Year after being nominated by the NEA Southwest Region. In her nomination letter she was praised for leading “with integrity, compassion and commitment to both students and educators,” while building a culture based on relationships and trust. Julie Wotjko, President of NEA-LC said: “Under her leadership, students know they are valued, and teachers know they are supported. Anita creates an environment where educators feel empowered to do their best work because they have a leader who stands beside them and advocates for them every step of the way.”

Gail Wheeler received the New Mexico Human and Civil Rights Award in recognition of her mentorship with struggling students at Centennial High School where she also started its first Gay Straight Alliance Club. Bob Wofford, LCPS Board Vice President said: “Both in and out of the classroom Gail Wheeler has been a champion for her students…she has shown her students that we can set about to make this world a better place for children.”

“These recognitions reflect the incredible talent, dedication and heart found across Las Cruces Public Schools,” Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz said. “Each of these three educators represent the very best of public education through their service to students, support for colleagues and commitment to building strong inclusive school communities. We are incredibly proud of each of them.”

Las Cruces Public Schools promotes a vision where all learners thrive while honoring diversity; it serves roughly 23,000 students with about 3,200 staff members across 40 schools including elementary schools through high schools throughout Las Cruces area communities such as Mesilla Village or Doña Ana County; it also collaborates with New Mexico State University through early college high schools according to the official website.
