A Texas man was sentenced on Apr. 24 to nearly 22 years in prison after fleeing a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint at high speed, causing a fatal crash while transporting almost 10 kilograms of methamphetamine.
The case concerns Jeffery Christopher Saint Louis, age 29, who approached a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 54 on November 8, 2023. After being referred to secondary inspection, Saint Louis fled at speeds over 100 miles per hour and drove into oncoming traffic. He ultimately collided head-on with a motorcyclist, killing the victim at the scene.
Court documents show that data from the vehicle indicated Saint Louis was traveling about 71 miles per hour and did not apply his brakes before impact. After the collision, he was detained by responding officers when his vehicle veered off the road into nearby brush.
A search of the car revealed approximately 9.9 kilograms of pure methamphetamine hidden in the trunk. During interviews with law enforcement, Saint Louis admitted knowing about the narcotics and intending to distribute them. He also acknowledged fleeing because of the drugs.
Saint Louis pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and high-speed flight from an immigration checkpoint. Upon release from prison, he will face five years of supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Omar Arellano, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, announced the sentence. The investigation involved multiple agencies including Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Border Patrol, New Mexico State Police, Alamogordo Police Department and Otero County Sheriff’s Department.
