A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the San Miguel County NM Clerk & Election Division on February 5, 2025. The request was made by Enchantment State News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the interest of transparency and public accountability, we requested records under the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act, 14-2-1 NMSA 1978 et seq. Specifically, we sought a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election.
The details requested for each candidate included their first, middle and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; party affiliation; as well as their contact information such as address, phone number and email address.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, we believe access to these public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities.
We have also applied for a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating information to the public.
