Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a statement on Veterans Day, recognizing the sacrifices of New Mexico's veterans. She noted that over 140,000 veterans reside in the state, reflecting its unique spirit.
The governor highlighted the recent opening of the Taos County Veterans Cemetery. "Today, we proudly celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Taos County Veterans Cemetery," she stated. The cemetery was constructed with nearly $7.5 million in state funds and is intended as a place of honor for veterans.
Grisham's administration has also implemented financial support measures for veterans. She mentioned, "We have eliminated state taxes on Social Security income for most seniors—up to $100,000 for single filers and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly—and exempted the first $30,000 of military retirement benefits from taxation."
Additionally, investments have been made in facilities at the New Mexico State Veterans’ Home to enhance care for veterans. As part of her message, Grisham urged residents to express gratitude to veterans: "Their sacrifices remind us of the true cost of freedom and the enduring strength of the American spirit."
The governor emphasized continued support and appreciation for veterans and their families: "May we honor and support them, now and always."
