Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency in response to the winter storm affecting New Mexico. This action releases $1.5 million in state funds to aid agencies dealing with the severe weather.

“This declaration gives the state more resources to continue supporting local responders as this major snowstorm persists,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “I thank every single responder who has been out in the cold since Wednesday clearing roads, escorting people to safety, and doing what needs to be done to support New Mexicans challenged by this storm.”

Since Wednesday, various agencies have assisted local emergency managers and public safety personnel. The New Mexico State Police have responded to numerous calls from stranded motorists, while the Department of Transportation has deployed 255 snowplows to clear roads, continuing their efforts through the night. Additionally, the New Mexico National Guard is working on road clearance in Las Vegas. The State Emergency Operations Center is active, coordinating resources and responses across multiple agencies.

Executive Orders 2024-158 and 2024-159 instruct the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to distribute $750,000 each to the New Mexico National Guard and for other emergency response activities.

Residents are advised to avoid traveling as much as possible during the ongoing storm and follow safety measures for winter conditions. Information on staying safe during winter weather and locations of warming centers is available at dhsem.nm.gov/severeweather. In emergencies such as being stranded roadside, individuals should call 911.
