APD Arrests 15-Year-Old for Murder at Westgate Park

Murder

City of Albuquerque issued the following announcement on April 8.

ALBUQUERQUE – APD’s SWAT team arrested 15-year-old Michael Salinas, Jr., who is charged for the February murder of Vincent Phuc Loc Le at Westgate Community Park.

Salinas was taken into custody this morning at his South Valley home. He is accused of setting up a planned fight with another individual at the park following a high school basketball game. As the vehicle with four individuals approached the park, Salinas exited his Mustang and fired 17 shots, killing Le and injuring three others inside the car. Someone from the victim’s car fired 13 shots back at Salinas.

Homicide detectives learned from witnesses that occupants of the victim’s car encountered Salinas earlier the night of Feb. 26, 2022, during a game at Volcano Vista High School. The group said they had an ongoing “beef” with Salinas. They agreed to meet Salinas at Westgate Community Park, located at 10812 Rio Puerco Trail, S.W.

Analysts with APD’s Digital Intelligence Unit used phone and social media records to corroborate details learned by detectives about the events before, during and after the shooting shortly before 9 p.m. APD’s ShotSpotter technology was also used to pinpoint the number of shots fired and approximate locations, which matched witness statements.

Salinas is charged with an open count of murder. He was booked today into the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center,
