An estimated 60,000 New Mexico residents may never have applied for federal CARES Act funds for which they are eligible, and the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is trying to help remedy that.
The state revenue department worked with the New Mexico Human Services Department to identify the individuals, who are believed to have not filed a federal tax return in either 2018 or 2019, meaning they would not have received an Economic Impact Payment, according to a press release from Taxation and Revenue. That would mean they are missing out on up to $1,200 per individual, as well as $500 per qualifying child.
“The pandemic has put many New Mexicans in unprecedented financial strain,” Stephanie Clarke, Taxation and Revenue secretary, said in the release. “We want everyone who may be eligible for a stimulus payment to apply for that money.”
The state has sent out letters to all individuals who they believe failed to receive a payment, according to the release.
