New Mexico's special election is scheduled for June 18, the Rio Grande Foundation reported.
When Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham made the announcement of the special election, she said she didn't anticipate any cuts, according to the foundation.
“We’re in a pretty good position where I don’t anticipate we’ll have to make deep cuts," the foundation reported Lujan Grisham said.
The foundation points out that New Mexico has a large rainy day fund because of several years of rapid growth in the Permian Basin and oil prices.
The foundation opines that Lujan Grisham could be minimizing the economic pain and will, instead, likely have a tax hike or spending cut discussion after the election during the 2021 session.
"Gov. MLG has every incentive to minimize the economic pain for the Democrat-majority in the Legislature that has rubber-stamped so many of her big-spending policies over the last two years," Paul Gessing wrote for the foundation.
