As businesses are forced to shut down amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Republican Party of New Mexico has distanced itself from a group that is championing for the reopening of non-essential businesses, Take Back New Mexico.

Speaking on the issue, the State GOP chairman Steve Pearce was quick to dismiss the actions of the group after it violated the stay-at-home order.

Chairman Pearce was forced to speak out after the organizer of Take Back New Mexico, O’Rion Perry, said that the party was issuing its support to the organization in a KUNM interview.

According to KUNM, chairman Pearce said despite neither he nor anyone with the authority of speaking on behalf of the party meeting or engaging with the organization, he still respects the First Amendment rights exercised by people to require the reopening of their businesses.

Based on the KUNM interview, Pearce made it clear that the party doesn’t often endorse every initiative that they help.
