City of Gallup NM issued the following announcement on Apr. 15.

The Gallup City Council held an emergency meeting on April 14, 2020, to evaluate measures to protect members of our community from the spread of COVID-19.   After discussion and the consideration of public comment, the City Council passed an ordinance governing the sales of alcohol during this emergency.

Effective Monday, April 20th, alcohol sales are limited to only grocery store retailers. Convenience stores that hold a dispenser’s license may not sell alcoholic beverages until the Governor of New Mexico revokes the Declaration of a Health Emergency contained in Executive Order 2020-004. Convenience stores are defined as a business that sells products such as food, beverages, tobacco products, medicines, dry goods, lottery tickets, and other consumer items directly to consumers that also has a retail space less than four thousand (4,000) square feet.

The City of Gallup chose to act in accordance with the Health Secretary’s April 6, 2020, Public Health Order in which it states that the Order does not “restrain or preempt local authorities from enacting more stringent restrictions than those required by the Order,” with additional consideration given to compliance with other state laws governing municipal functions.

The objective of this ordinance is to reduce the spread of COVID-19 within our significant population of homeless individuals.  These are difficult times and the Gallup City Council encourages everyone to continue to stay home, wash their hands, and do everything in your power to reduce the spread of the virus in our community.
