The New Mexico Republican Party is opposing a request made by more than two dozen county clerks to have everyone mail in their votes for the June 2 primary.
County clerks sent a petition to the Supreme Court seeking an emergency court action to move the primaries to mail-in ballots due to coronavirus concerns.
“While everyone understands and appreciates the health and safety concerns during this pandemic, a vote-by-mail (VBM) election in New Mexico provides no security and no ability to control who votes once the ballots are mailed to every registered voter,” the Republican Party of New Mexico wrote in a statement on its website. “The Party believes this motion bypasses the legislature and that a mail-in election would invite fraud and other issues. The Party does support what the law currently allows–mail-in absentee ballots.”
The petition for all mail-in ballots was signed by 27 clerks consisting of both Republicans and Democrats. Clerks said they would open a limited number of polling sites to accommodate voters who must vote in person, need assistance voting, or want to drop off a ballot.
