The State Fairgrounds District Board has approved a $67.8 million predevelopment plan aimed at enhancing the Albuquerque International District and surrounding neighborhoods. The unanimous decision was made during a meeting on Thursday in Santa Fe.

The plan is part of a larger master planning process that began in July and is expected to conclude by March 2026. Key features include the development of a 10-acre public park, new green spaces across the 236-acre property, and pedestrian-friendly improvements along the Fairgrounds’ boundaries. Planned amenities for the park involve stormwater management systems, plazas, trails, play areas, and restrooms. The specific location for the park will be determined later.

According to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, “Today’s unanimous vote reflects broad support for redeveloping the State Fairgrounds and revitalizing central Albuquerque. I look forward to continued community discussion and work on this vitally important project.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 with completion targeted for fall 2029. This latest board approval follows an earlier September decision allocating $22.35 million from district bond funds for acquiring a 14-acre parcel on the southwest side of the Fairgrounds.

Dr. Peter Belletto, president of the District 6 Neighborhood Coalition, commented on the significance of this step: “The State Fairgrounds District Board has taken the first step to transform the southeastern district six into a thriving economic hub. This action will drive public investment job growth and small business development.”

The next board meeting is set for December 11. Residents can find more information or participate in a community survey open until mid-November by visiting www.fairgroundsdistrict.nm.gov.

The New Mexico Fairgrounds District Board was established by statute in early 2025 to oversee redevelopment efforts intended to benefit nearby communities.
