The New Mexico Senate has approved Senate Bill 48, which would allow for $92 million in bonds to support redevelopment at the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque’s International District. The bill, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart and Representative Janelle Anyanonu, will now move to the House of Representatives for consideration.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham commented on the development, stating, “Today’s Senate vote moves us one step closer to a historic revitalization of the International District and central Albuquerque. This bonding authority in a neighborhood with enormous potential will create the kind of mixed-use development with housing, vibrant streets and the economic opportunity that this community deserves.”
The project has already received nearly $100 million in initial funding from the State Board of Finance. These funds have been used for land acquisition and infrastructure improvements, including plans for a 10-acre public park featuring trails, play areas and pedestrian safety upgrades along the Fairgrounds’ boundary.
The master plan for redeveloping the Fairgrounds is being developed by Stantec design firm and is expected to be finalized soon. This plan will guide future decisions regarding possible mixed-income housing options, a new exhibition hall and more green space at the site.
Senate Bill 48 still requires approval from both legislative chambers before any bonds can be issued. Oversight of project implementation will be handled by the State Fairgrounds District Board. Members include Governor Lujan Grisham, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Senate President Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart.
