Santa Fe County announced on May 7 that it has expanded its free tire recycling program for the entire month of May, supported by a grant from the New Mexico Environment Department RAID program. The initiative is available to county residents who present a valid ID and proof of address or a solid waste permit.

The expanded recycling effort aims to reduce illegal dumping, which can create fire risks and environmental hazards. Properly recycled tires are processed into new products such as flooring, roofing materials, and sports surfaces. Residents may recycle up to eight tires per person per day at six collection centers—Eldorado, Jacona, La Cienega, Nambe, San Marcos, and Stanley—with rims required to be removed before drop-off.

In addition to tire recycling, Santa Fe County is offering ten free green waste disposal days throughout the year. Two upcoming events will take place on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 at the Stanley, Jacona, and Eldorado Collection Centers. Green waste—including yard clippings, leaves, lawn trimmings under 18 inches in diameter—will be processed into mulch and compost rather than being openly burned. Items such as weeds, cholla cactus, sod with root balls or stumps are not accepted during these events.

The county website provides more information about eligibility requirements for both programs as well as dates for future green waste disposal days. According to the official website, Santa Fe County promotes community engagement through public meetings and advisory boards while supporting operations through administrative facilities across the region.

Santa Fe County operates under a Board of County Commissioners with administrative oversight provided by a County Manager. The county focuses on transparent governance and resource stewardship while providing essential services such as public safety and health care to residents in municipalities and unincorporated areas alike according to the official website.
