The Santa Fe County Fire Department announced on May 8 that it is updating its Community Wildfire Protection Plan and is seeking public input through a comment period open until May 24. A webinar will also be held on May 20 to inform residents about the plan and encourage their participation.
The updated plan aims to protect lives and reduce property loss due to wildfires. Residents can view the draft version of the plan on the Santa Fe County Wildland Division webpage and submit comments via an online portal during the open period. Community members are encouraged to participate so that local conditions, priorities, and knowledge are reflected in the final document.
A public survey has been launched to gather feedback from residents about wildfire risks in their neighborhoods and what actions they would like taken to further reduce those risks. Survey responses will help shape recommendations for projects and resources included in the final draft of the plan.
“Community input is important so that the final plan reflects local conditions, community priorities, and on-the-ground knowledge,” said county officials in a statement released with details about participation opportunities.
Santa Fe County promotes community engagement through public meetings, advisory boards, and access to documents, according to the official website. The county operates under a Board of County Commissioners for policy-making with administrative oversight provided by a County Manager. Services extend across incorporated municipalities, pueblos, unincorporated areas, and include areas such as public safety, health services, public works, human services, and community development.
The department encourages all interested residents to join the webinar scheduled for May 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., learn more about wildfire protection efforts in Santa Fe County, and provide valuable feedback.
