Public safety agencies in Northern New Mexico are coming together to ensure the safety of thousands participating in the annual Good Friday Pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayó. The event is set for Friday, April 18, 2025, with coordinated safety measures led by the Santa Fe County Fire Department, Santa Fe County Office of Emergency Management, and Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, alongside 29 regional agencies.
The Santuario de Chimayó, an important Roman Catholic church and shrine, attracts over 30,000 pilgrims each year during holy week. These pilgrims, known as “peregrinos,” come seeking spiritual renewal and healing. To accommodate the large number of participants, regional authorities are working together to maintain public safety along the pilgrimage route.
With the pilgrimage beginning Thursday night, April 17, 2025, and continuing throughout the Easter weekend, drivers should expect delays on major routes. These include Highway 84/285, NM Highway 503, Juan Medina Road leading to Chimayó, and State Road 76 from Espanola to Chimayo. Enhanced traffic patrols will be in effect, with several law enforcement agencies and firefighting departments collaborating to secure the event.
It is advised that those participating in the pilgrimage plan carefully. Participants should plan a route in advance, set check-in locations, and arrange pick-up and drop-off points. As cell phone service may be unreliable, it is important to inform someone of your planned route and expected arrival time.
Participants are encouraged to follow safety guidelines such as using designated paths, wearing visible clothing, and carrying necessary supplies like water, snacks, and sunscreen. Groups are advised to stay together and off roadways, while anyone needing assistance should call 911.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is preparing the roadways by clearing sand, salt, and debris, picking up trash, and trimming overgrown foliage along the route. NMDOT employees will also set up signs and station teams along the routes to assist pilgrims.
Motorists in the Chimayó area should anticipate significant delays and increased pedestrian activity, with potential road closures, including the third lane of US-84/285 N, for pedestrian use.
