APD detectives today arrested and charged 19-year-old Isaac Martinez for the Feb. 19, 2022, murder of Jonathan Garza outside of a Downtown bar.
Witnesses said Garza, 30, was a well-known fitness trainer who was defending his brother as he attempted to break up a fight between individuals who gathered at the Canvas Artistry at One Central Ave. After the fight, Garza was shot several times. The shooter was identified by witnesses as a heavy set Hispanic or Native American male, wearing all black, with a gold chain around his neck, wearing a black designer satchel or purse with a strap across his body and had a “squared haircut.”
Detectives used the description to gather additional information from social media, surveillance video, and cell phone data to identify Martinez as the offender.
Martinez is being charged with an open count of murder. He will be booked into the Metro Detention Center.
APD has advocates for victims of violent crimes, including domestic violence and sex crimes. Victims, including family of homicide victims, can call 505-924-6028 to reach one of the advocates. Victim advocates can also be reached by email: DVC@cabq.gov.
