The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has introduced two digital tools aimed at helping small business owners, policymakers, and the public in New Mexico understand the impact of the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction. These tools are designed to highlight what could be lost if Congress does not make this deduction permanent.
One of the tools is an interactive map that provides insights into how extending the Small Business Deduction could drive job creation and GDP growth across New Mexico’s three congressional districts. Additionally, NFIB has launched a tax calculator to help small business owners estimate potential increases in federal income taxes they might face in 2026 if the deduction expires.
“These new tools give small business owners and elected leaders in New Mexico real data about the economic stakes,” said Jason Espinoza, state director for NFIB in New Mexico. “If Congress fails to act, millions of small businesses across the country—including right here in New Mexico—will face a massive tax hike. That means fewer jobs, less investment, and slower growth for our communities. We urge Congress to make the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction permanent.”
According to NFIB’s interactive map, making the deduction permanent could result in an increase of 13,057 jobs and $636 million in GDP for New Mexico over the next decade. The district-level data offer lawmakers and local leaders a clearer picture of how their communities could benefit or suffer based on whether or not the deduction is extended.
The tax calculator offers projections for individual small business owners regarding potential tax increases should the deduction not be extended. For instance, a New Mexico small business owner with a personal income of $75,000 and qualified business income of $150,000 might see their taxes rise by more than $13,000 depending on their full financial profile.
