The New Mexico Lobos baseball team lost 6-5 to Grand Canyon University in a game that went into extra innings on May 8. The game was held at Brazell Field and marked the opener of the weekend series between the two teams.

The result has implications for the Mountain West Tournament, as New Mexico can secure its third consecutive appearance in the tournament with two wins over the weekend. The team will need to win Saturday’s Game Two, which is scheduled for an 8 p.m. Mountain Time first pitch.

The Lobos started strong, taking a 4-0 lead in the second inning thanks to key hits from Brodey Williams and Karsen Waslefsky. Waslefsky hit his sixth home run of the season, driving in three runs. In total, New Mexico recorded nine hits during the game, with Williams and Khalil Walker each collecting two singles. Other contributors included Anthony Diaz, Luke Mansy, Gene Trujillo, and Waslefsky.

Pitcher Cristian Mogen kept Grand Canyon close by allowing only two earned runs over more than seven innings while striking out five batters without issuing any walks. Cooper Corkrean took over pitching duties late in the game but allowed a two-run homer that narrowed New Mexico’s lead to one run.

Grand Canyon tied up the score in the ninth inning before winning with a solo home run in extra innings. “Tomorrow’s Game Two is set for an 8 p.m. MT first pitch,” according to information released by UNM Baseball.
