The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) has introduced a new initiative titled the “Matriarchs of New Mexico Agriculture” campaign. This program aims to honor women who have significantly contributed to the state’s agricultural sector. The NMDA is currently accepting nominations for the 2026 class, with a deadline set for Friday, June 21, at midnight.
This campaign seeks to recognize women who have dedicated their lives to advancing agriculture in New Mexico through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. A matriarch is defined as a “head of family or tribe” or “an older woman who is powerful within a family or organization,” and NMDA intends to highlight those who exemplify these qualities.
New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte stated, “With 2025 as the inaugural year for this campaign, NMDA has selected two legendary women to kick off the campaign and inspire future nominations.” He added that these honorees have been instrumental in supporting both the agriculture industry and NMDA’s initiatives over recent years. They will receive formal recognition in September.
Promotional efforts for this campaign include TV and online advertisements set to begin in January 2026. These efforts align with global initiatives by the United Nations aimed at recognizing women’s essential roles in food security worldwide.
Nominations are open statewide and can include both living and posthumous candidates. Further information, including nomination forms and an official campaign logo, can be found on the NMDA’s website.
