The New Mexico Drought Task Force convened following Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s executive order declaring a state of emergency due to ongoing severe drought and increasing fire risk in the state. The executive order, issued on May 22, 2025, aims to prompt immediate action from state agencies to mitigate the impacts of drought and wildfire threats.
Governor Lujan Grisham stated, “Despite some spring precipitation, almost all of New Mexico remains in conditions that threaten water supplies and elevate fire danger.” She emphasized the need for decisive actions beyond current fire restrictions imposed by the State Forester in high-risk areas.
The task force, led by State Engineer Elizabeth Anderson, is responsible for coordinating response efforts across more than ten state agencies. Its duties include disseminating resources to help communities manage drought conditions and conserve water supplies. The task force will also recommend specific short-term actions by July 31 for addressing drought and reducing wildfire risk. Additionally, it will compile funding sources to assist individuals, Nations, Tribes, Pueblos, and local governments.
Governor Lujan Grisham has called on local governments to implement measures such as water use restrictions and fireworks bans. State Engineer Anderson highlighted the severity of current conditions: “New Mexico’s river basins have seen below average precipitation this year, and our reservoir levels are among the lowest on record.”
State Forester Laura McCarthy remarked on recent history with wildfires: “Over the past two years, we’ve seen some of the worst wildfires in our state’s history. The continuing drought keeps that threat high.” She underscored the importance of conserving water and reducing fire risks.
The Drought Task Force includes representatives from various departments including Agriculture, Economic Development, Energy Minerals and Natural Resources, Environment Finance and Administration Homeland Security Emergency Management Indian Affairs Tourism New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission New Mexico Finance Authority.
