SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is urging drivers to ensure their cargo is securely fastened as part of the upcoming National Secure Your Load Day on June 6. This initiative aims to prevent accidents caused by unsecured loads, which result in approximately 730 fatalities and 17,000 injuries annually across the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Transportation Secretary Ricky Serna emphasized the importance of securing cargo: “Securing cargo isn’t just the law, it’s the difference between a safe trip and a tragedy.” He highlighted that debris hitting a windshield could pose significant risks to other families on the road.
Unsecured loads can become dangerous projectiles at highway speeds. A 20-pound toolbox falling from a vehicle can strike with the force equivalent to a six-person hot tub crashing through a windshield. Beyond personal safety concerns, these incidents lead to traffic disruptions and property damage, costing NMDOT $10 million annually for debris cleanup on New Mexico roads.
Drivers are encouraged to follow five steps before traveling: cover loads with sturdy materials, tie down cargo securely, attach large objects directly to vehicles or trailers, avoid overloading beyond capacity, and double-check all secured points.
A quick safety check is recommended before departure. Drivers should consider whether they would feel safe driving behind their own vehicle and assess potential outcomes if sudden braking or bumps occur. If any doubts arise about load security, re-securing is advised as it could prevent accidents and save lives.
