The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is inviting residents to contribute to a Statewide Aesthetics Plan aimed at shaping the visual character of roadways across the state. This initiative seeks to establish design guidelines for various highway elements such as bridges, interchanges, sound walls, rest areas, and landscaping.
John Busemeyer, an NMDOT representative, emphasized the importance of these aesthetic treatments: “The aesthetic treatments we implement are powerful expressions of New Mexico’s extraordinary cultural heritage, diverse ecosystems, and rich history.” He added that these designs help preserve the scenic vistas that define travel experiences in New Mexico.
NMDOT is currently developing a guide for aesthetic treatments on roadways and structures. These efforts aim to integrate New Mexico’s history, cultures, and ecologies into transportation infrastructure. By participating in this public input process, residents can influence how these elements honor multicultural traditions and celebrate natural landscapes.
Residents are encouraged to participate by completing a survey before March 31. Their insights will help ensure that the state’s roadways reflect New Mexico’s unique identity.
