The New Mexico Department of Transportation is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert during National Work Zone Awareness Week, which takes place April 20–24. The department made the announcement as construction season begins across the state and orange barrels appear on roadways.

National Work Zone Awareness Week highlights the importance of safe driving in work zones and draws attention to the risks faced by roadway crews. This year’s theme, “Safe actions save lives,” emphasizes that simple driver choices can prevent crashes. In the past year, several work zone incidents in New Mexico have resulted in serious injuries, prompting officials to call for increased attention and caution.

Drivers are being encouraged to reduce speed, eliminate distractions such as cell phones, and follow all posted signs when traveling through active construction areas. “Bottom line, we need people to stay alert in work zones,” said Acting Cabinet Secretary David D. Quintana, P.E. “Simple actions like slowing down and putting your phone away can save lives.”

Throughout the week, message boards across New Mexico will display safety reminders about work zones. The department’s social media channels will share tips focused on work zone safety, while office building lobbies will feature remembrance cones honoring workers who have lost their lives in these areas.

Go Orange Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22. On this day, residents are encouraged to wear orange as a sign of support for roadway workers and families affected by work zone crashes.

More information about work zone safety can be found on the NMDOT website.
