Of the $7.5 billion in taxes collected by New Mexico in 2021, $235.1 million came from insurance premiums sales tax, a 5.2 percent increase over the previous year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections (STC).

New Mexico collected $223.3 million in insurance premiums sales tax in 2020.

The STC survey includes five broad tax categories and up to 25 subcategories. Data is gathered from all 50 state governments and all dependent state-level entities.

The Census Bureau sets the tax classifications among the survey categories and cautions they may differ from the classifications set by the state governments.

Out of the $13.7 billion in total tax revenue collected by New Mexico in 2024, $24.5 million came from alcoholic beverages sales taxes, representing an increase from the previous year, when the total was $24.4 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections (STC).
